Rooftop Regrets: Why Specialist Contractors Matter

Hire a Specialist

When hiring a roofing contractor, it's wise to opt for one who specializes exclusively in roofing. There's a multitude of contractors out there offering services spanning roofing, windows, doors, and even backyard decks. While I'm not suggesting that they can't excel in all these areas, it's rather uncommon. A specialist is often the better choice. Think of these renovation projects as assembling a football team.

Imagine you're scouting for a kicker and a candidate says, "Sure, I'm a kicker, but I also play as a fullback and I'm an exceptional quarterback." That should raise some eyebrows. You'd ideally want someone who's wholly committed to mastering their kicks, right? The same principle applies when selecting a contractor.

Choosing a roofing specialist ensures that they'll have a yard stocked with the precise materials needed for the job. They'll maintain stronger ties with vendors and manufacturers. Having tackled numerous projects, they're adept at anticipating and resolving common issues. Their dedication ensures your project is executed flawlessly. After all, these renovations are significant investments.

Go for a specialist. Choose the best in the business.

Roof repair horror stories

The Leaky Roof Saga

A homeowner, Mrs. Parker, decided to save some money by hiring a general contractor who promised to handle roofing at a reduced price. After the job was "completed," the first heavy rain revealed numerous leaks throughout the house. Not only did Mrs. Parker have to pay for roof repairs again, but she also had to manage water damage to her interior walls and furniture.

One homeowner hired a contractor who claimed to be an expert in roofing, siding, and gutters. The contractor installed a new roof, but did not use proper flashing or ventilation. The roof started to leak and mold within a few months, causing damage to the attic and the interior walls. The homeowner had to pay another contractor to fix the roof and the water damage, costing him thousands of dollars more than he expected.

The Deck Builder's Debacle

A family, the Thompsons, hired a deck builder who claimed he could also fix roofs. While the deck was beautifully made, the roof was not correctly installed. The ventilation was improperly set up, leading to significant mold growth in the attic, causing health issues and requiring extensive remediation.

Mismatched Materials

Mr. Rodriguez hired a contractor who typically worked on interior renovations. The contractor used a hodgepodge of materials to patch areas of the roof, resulting in an unsightly patchwork appearance. The roof's integrity was compromised, and Mr. Rodriguez had to hire a specialist to replace the entire roof correctly.
